Piedmont Triad International Airport is located in unincorporated Guilford County, in North Carolina, at the west of Greensboro. The airport serves the Piedmont Triad region in Greensboro, High Point, Winston-Salem, and the entire Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina.

The airport codes are IATA: GSO, FAA LID: GSO, ICAO: KGSO, besides, Piedmont Triad airport is also commonly referred to as PTI airport. GSO airport code stands for the Greensboro region.

A brief overview of PTI History

The airport had its start in the 1920s when PTI became an East Coast transportation hub. During the 1970s, the Piedmont airport was renamed as ‘Greensboro-High Point Airport’; Later, it was named ‘Greensboro–High Point–Winston-Salem Regional Airport.’

In 1978, the renovation and addition of new facilities began at PTI. Meanwhile, PTI gained prominence on the East Coast, by providing services from Piedmont Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Eastern Air Lines, and United Airlines.

The airport covers 3,770 acres (1,526 ha) and includes three runways. GSO became the 3rd busiest airport in whole North Carolina since it averaged 280 take-offs and landings per day.

For 2011-2015, PTI was ranked by FAA’s National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems, as being the primary-commercial service airport, because it reached more than 10,000 passenger boarding enplanements.

In 2016, with around 1.7 million passengers and three runways, Piedmont Triad Airport was served by both major and minor airlines that offer non-stop flights to many U.S cities, along with connections to other destinations worldwide.

In 2019, PTI averaged around 246 aircraft operations each day: 37% for general aviation, 33% for air taxi, 28% for scheduled commercial, and 2% for military.

Currently, about 86 aircraft are based at the airport property: 67 single-engine, 11 multi-engine, and 8 jets.
